TOP 3 WAYS TO SUPPORT THE DYSLEXIA BILLS 2017

UPDATE 2/6/17:

ACTION ALERT:  Contact your Senators and Delegates and ask them to support HB2395 and SB1516.  The second reading on the floor happened today and they should do a third reading by tomorrow.  Wednesday should be a vote for each on the Senate side and House side and if they pass, they’ll be ready for crossover.

Please contact your legislator ASAP!  Talking points below!  Live feed link below!

  • As you may be aware, dyslexia is the most common learning disability, for students of average to above average intelligence, that affects the student’s ability to read accurately and fluently, communicate their thoughts in writing, understand the language of math as well as learn a foreign language.
  • Senator Black’s bill provides the opportunity for school districts to strengthen much needed supports and interventions for dyslexic students.   A Dyslexia Advisor at the district level would be able to support the school system in determining effective identification tools, evidenced based interventions and accommodations as well as appropriate assistive technology.
  • This bill builds upon the successful legislation (HB842- Teacher Training on Dyslexia)  with little to no  ‘fiscal impact.”   At this time, the Virginia Dept. of Ed (VDOE) has already provided 200 teachers in the Commonwealth with training to a level appropriate to serve in this position.   On top of that, the VDOE will be training 80 more teachers this summer!
  • Another VERY important point is that this is NOT a mandated bill….meaning it is not mandatory.  Someone who spoke in opposition to our bill tried to say it was mandated.   Just so you all know, Senator Black amended the bill to allow flexibility for small school districts who don’t already employ Reading Specialists.  So, don’t quote me on the exact amended language (not sure if it is posted yet) but it basically implies, “if you already employ Reading Specialists, one will be identified to serve as the district’s Dyslexia Advisor.”

UPDATE 2/1/17:

ACTION ALERT!  SB1516 is on the Senate Committee on Education and Health docket for tomorrow morning!  8:00 A.M. – Senate Room B. Join DDVA as we stand in support of this bill introduced by Senator Dick Black!  Call/email your senator (and the Senate Education Committee) to ask them to support the bill.

UPDATE 1/29/17: HB2395 is up for review in front the the Full House Education Committee TOMORROW.  Join us tomorrow as we support HB2395  at 8:30am in House Room D of the General Assembly Building.  If you haven’t already, please send an email to the Full House Education Committee in support of HB2395.
